Guest Post: What Do Men And Women Focus On When Watching Porn?

Erotic sex

The question as to what men and women look at when watching pornography might be a pertinent one. Many people would think that it is the genitals or bodies of the actors, especially when the porn viewers of erotic sex are male. This might make sense intuitively, but the actual research findings showcase something else.

In a study conducted recently, it was found that female and male heterosexual participants, both viewed images that were sexually explicit from the internet. The images comprised of couples being engaged in intercourse or erotic sex. In the survey, the participants were fitted with an eye-tracking device that was head mounted to record which part of the image the individuals focused upon during viewing of the images. Researchers could then measure what captured the attention of the viewers as well as identify the areas where the participants looked at mostly.

The main finding was that men looked at the female faces most of the time which caught their attention the most in erotic sex. This was not the only thing that they focused upon since they looked at the genitals as well. There was variability when it came to what features the different men focused upon. It is, however, interesting to note that they looked at the women’s faces most since that indicated how excited they were or were into it. This is against the popular intuition that men usually focus on the genitals and the female body parts when they view porn.

In the case of female participants, they focused upon whether the women were taking the pill; hence they were mostly looking at the genitals and the female body during scenes of sexual intercourse. Naturally, cycling women who are not into hormonal contraceptives spent little time looking at faces.

Women who were not oral contraceptives spent less time looking at features that were sexual and spent more time looking at things in a context such as a background image and actors’ clothing in erotic sex. They also looked at the faces and bodies of women, but less attention was paid to the genitals as compared to men.

When it comes to the results seen in female participants, many might wonder why the focus is on whether a woman was using birth control. This is because the hormonal levels affect the traits accordingly. As per the reasoning of the researchers, the two groups of women have differences in their hormonal levels; while those who follow natural cycles will experience fluctuations in their hormonal levels, those on contraceptive pills will have relatively constant hormonal levels. Heterosexual women usually compare themselves to the women they see on the screen. It is also due to the erotic plasticity that women exhibit that is more in them than in men.

Based on the above findings, it is evident that not everyone sees the same thing when they are watching porn. It differs between men and women, their sexual orientation as well as hormonal cycles.

  1. That’s so interesting. I thought about what I look at when watching porn before reading the post. I look at the surroundings and the interaction between the people. I’ve always thought perhaps I was different to many viewers of porn.
Upon reading the post I realised that, with my contraceptive implant, I fit perfectly with those statistics.
