Body & Image #SoSS #45

Something many of us struggle with – men and women – is body image. If I look at myself, I have many days that I look at myself in the mirror and think: you don’t look bad. Other days I stand in front of the mirror and I hate that my belly is bigger, that my thighs are thicker and that I have stretch marks. Thankfully, most of the time I am okay with my body. It is what it is, I take care of it much better now than I have the last 20 years, and most of all I just want to LIVE and accept that I am who I am, that this is my body which has given me two kids, has had the strength to carry on through all the hardships of life, and that there are people who derive pleasure from it.

One thing that has really helped and is still helping to accept myself as I am, is posting images of myself. And not only posting them, but receiving feedback on them. It helps to see yourself through the eyes of other people, and that can gradually change the way you view yourself. Sometimes, that’s a good thing…

Sexy writing

One of the posts that moved me this week is Julie’s My body and me. Sometimes something happens in our lives, making us realize that some things we have always thought are important, actually are not.

She’s a greedy, greedy girl and the way she writes about the sweet torture she is put through, makes me feel the need for greed too!

This week, once again, I am including two of Cara Thereon’s stories as the one follows the other. I like a good detective story, and I hope Cara continues what she has started in Playing God and Deal with the devil.

Molly is a stunning photographer and the queen of self photography, and here, as a Seasonal Gift in her garden, she just looks stunning.

I have been following Livvy’s photos with interest, every week looking out for the next one, to see the beauty of her pregnancy! It’s such a privilege that Livvy allows us to be part of her journey.

Me in the gym…

I started the post out talking about body image and mentioning that I am taking much better care of my body now than I did for the last 20 years. Twenty years might not be accurate, as back in 1999 and 2000 I walked the ‘Vierdaagse’ in Nijmegen, Netherlands, which is a yearly event where you walk 30, 40 or 50 kilometers for four consecutive days. I did 40 back then, on both occasions, and I did it with my mom and my daughter. We walked a lot back then, and actually, when we stopped walking, I stopped doing anything physical to care for my body. I have tried many times to do some fitness at home and there were weeks where I started walking, but I always stopped again. At the end of June this year I started going to the gym twice a week, and I notice that my muscles are stronger and that I have more stamina. I don’t really notice any weight loss, but somehow I don’t even mind. I am taking care of my body, and that’s a lot more than I did three months ago.

My doctor once told me that a tired body is better than a tired mind, and I believe that starting to go to the gym has helped me to start healing mentally too. So, in caring for my body, I am also caring for my mind.

What do you do to care for your body and mind?

  1. Thank you for including my post in your round up this week Marie. You are so right, body and mind are so inextricably linked and to look after your body you need to take care of your mind too. And vice versa!
