Only 19 days left and then the race against the clock starts again. It’s almost time for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) 2016. On the first day of November 2016, millions of people around the world start writing their novels. Some do it for the first time, some for the second and others are real veterans who have done it for several years already.
NaNoWriMo 2016 is the fourth year that I will be participating. I failed in 2013, but in 2014 and 2015 I was a NaNoWriMo winner and hopefully this year will be the same. My biggest mistake in 2013 was that I never planned anything. I thought I could just start writing on 1 November and that the story would eventually write itself. I was so very wrong. I actually wasn’t planning to participate in 2014, but then I had an idea for a novel, which in the meantime has been published – Flight LU-365.
Since it was a lot easier to write a novel in 2014 because of the planning I did in the month before, I also planned for 2015. I was going to rewrite the very first ‘novel’ I have written when I was 14. I did, but the story is not strong enough yet. A lot of work still have to go into it to make it what I really want it to be.
Obviously, this year I also have a planning. When Flight LU-365 came out, I knew exactly what my second novel will be. Many years ago I self-published a book. I want to have the story re-published, but before that happens, the novel needs to be changed. It’s not up to par with the growth I have gone through as a writer and it’s missing something. I actually started editing the story, but because something was missing, I stopped. This was months ago.
Then suddenly, two weeks ago, I knew exactly what was missing. That was the moment when I decided that I would participate in NaNoWriMo again. The book is missing about 50.000 words, which will be written from 1-30 November 2016. The self-published book won’t be re-published but an entirely different story will. I’m excited and can’t wait to start writing. My planning is ready.
My planning is nothing more than a list where I decide on the number of chapters and a short description of what should happen in each chapter. That is enough to give me something to hold on to and to help me focus during the writing month.
So… will you? Will you be a NaNoWriMo 2016 participant? I have checked to see who of my former buddies have already indicated that they will participate, and there’s only one. Come on, there must be more of you who will participate this year? Let me know and let’s be buddies and support each other!
