#NaNoWriMo 2014

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 PM on November 30.

A year ago, on 1 November, I started writing for NaNoWriMo 2013. I managed a couple of 100 words the first day and then stared at my screen and didn’t know how to continue. I decided to leave it for the next day and try again. I never continued, realizing I just didn’t have a story to write. I thought I had, but starting on a story of 1000 words or 2500 words is a lot different than starting on something of 50 thousand words!

I gave up, put the goal to do NaNoWriMo 2013 to failed and immediately also did the same with the NaNoWriMo 2014 goal. I just didn’t have the time to do the NaNoWriMo challenge, was my excuse.

Then, sometime earlier this year I had an idea for a book. I have these ideas more frequently, but this one was different. It just didn’t leave my mind. I mulled the idea over and over in my mind and then finally decided to plan an outline for the book and add ideas as time goes on. I mailed myself the outline and more or less forgot about it. Until the last week of October. A tweet about NaNoWriMo popped up in my timeline. I immediately thought about the book outline I had in my email. It took but half a second to decide that I was going to attempt NaNoWriMo 2014.

But, I was not going to tell anyone about it. Not until I feel ready to tell them, that was. Okay, I told one person: the person who’s tweet I saw and who was participating too. On 1 November I started writing, following the outline I have drawn up weeks before. I was amazed when after three days I was running 2 days ahead on the daily goals of NaNoWriMo.

And I am still running ahead. The story just flowS from my fingers. I write every day, even at my work. I am constantly thinking about the storyline, constantly plotting and planning and on day 19 of NaNoWriMo 2014 – yesterday – my word count was 34.297 words. Thirty four thousand! I couldn’t even manage one thousand last year, let alone thirty four thousand!

I have the feeling that I might just make it this year.

Want to cheer me on? Follow my progress on the NaNoWriMo site. And if you are doing NaNoWriMo this year, please don’t hesitate to add me as a buddy. Let’s cheer each other on for the next ten days.
