It’s that time of year again. NaNoWriMo or National Novel Writing Month. In 2012 I also started with this challenge, but I gave up after the first weekend. I wrote the grand total of 891 words and then stopped. We were away for a play date that first weekend of November 2012 and after we came back, I started writing about the date, which took all of the time I should have been spending on NaNoWriMo. I knew there was no way in which I would be able to catch up after running a week behind, so I just gave up.
This year I am starting with renewed courage. This year I am determined to complete the challenge.
In the last two weeks two ideas for novels have been in my head. I do not know which one I will do. I will just allow my fingers to lead me and only when I actually start writing, I will know which novel I am going two write. Both of them have more or less the same theme, but with different starting points and different settings. I think eventually this novel will incorporate the two ideas I have in my head. By the end of the November 2013 I will know just which direction the novel took me.
Why do I want to do NaNoWriMo?
I write a lot – for my blog and for submission calls for anthologies. It is important to me to keep my blog going and frequently have new content on there. Back when I started the blog the idea was to post 3 or 4 new posts per week, but eventually I had so much to tell and so many ideas that I started posting every day. A couple of weeks ago I stopped posting on a Saturday and I have even skipped two or three Tuesdays too. I was planning to go back to my original idea to post 3 or 4 times a week, but there’s always something happening in my life that I want to share, hence the reason I still post 6 times a week.
Because of this busy schedule, I want to use NaNoWriMo to write this novel I had in my head for quite some time. I think NaNoWriMo will help me focus. If I can manage to write an average of 1670 words a day, I will get there. If I don’t, I will at least have made a start with the book I have in mind.
So wish me luck with this new challenge!
The above was the post I was going to place last week, but the closer it came to 1 November, the more I realized that I do not have the time to do it. I have two stories I am working on for anthology calls and I have some stories I am working on for my blog. Combine that with a 40 hour work week and a family life and I can tell you, there is NO space to join NaNoWriMo. If I only worked one day less a week, NaNoWriMo might have been possible. I have decided to put both the NaNoWriMo goals for 2013 and 2014 on failed, as I do not see NaNoWriMo happening next year either. For now I just want to concentrate on writing for anthology calls and my blog. And in between, in my own tempo, I will work on that novel I want to write.
