Background

Back in 2013 and 2014 I participated in Alison Tyler’s Smut Marathon. The first edition was in 2012 (I believe) and that is when I learned about it, so when she hosted it again in 2013, I knew I wanted to be one of the participants. In 2014 I participated for the second time and was one of the three winners.

At the end of 2013 I asked Alison whether she would be okay if I start a Dutch version of the Smut Marathon. She was perfectly okay with it, and I am proud to say that this year is the fourth time I am doing the Dutch one and it has evolved into quite the competition for Dutch erotic authors.

For more than a year I had this idea in my head, but I wasn’t really sure whether I can pull it off. Then I remembered that I had the same thoughts before I started the Dutch writing marathon. I sent Alison Tyler an email with the question: will you be okay if I organize the smut marathon?

Her answer came back: Of course. Thank you for asking.

So here I am to tell you that starting in 2018, I will be running the Smut Marathon 2.0 and I intend to run it every year for as long as I can. I will also be organizing it a bit different than Alison did, which will be more or less in the same way I do the Dutch one.

What is the Smut Marathon?

The Smut Marathon is a marathon in more ways than one.

Let me explain…

When Alison did the Smut Marathon, a number of writers signed up for it. They received an assignment and a date when that assignment should be done. Then a voting round of a couple of days was held and those with the lowest number for votes, had to leave the marathon. There was no fixed plan beforehand on how many would have to leave the race in each round or of how many rounds the marathon will have.

For the Dutch marathon I changed that and with each marathon I adjusted it a bit more, until I came to the following:

  1. The marathon has 10 rounds which run from the end of January to the beginning of December.
  2. Writers get an assignment and a deadline for each round.
  3. One of the most important rules: all through the marathon you are not allowed to tell others which story was yours, until the voting has closed for that specific round. Writers breaking this rule will be disqualified.
  4. We start out with short pieces and gradually as we progress in the marathon, writers are allowed to write more words.
  5. The writes have 2 weeks to write for round 1 and 2, three weeks for round 3 and 4 and four weeks for the rest of the rounds.
  6. Each voting week runs from Sunday to Saturday.
  7. There’s a fixed number of writers per round.
  8. At the end of round 1, round 3 and round 5 no writers have to leave the marathon.
  9. There is a general classification for the first 6 rounds, but from the seventh round onward those with the lowest number of votes will have to leave the marathon.
  10. If a writer doesn’t send in an assignment, he/she is automatically disqualified.

The Smut Marathon is a marathon for the writers, the readers, the voters and the organization.

Most of all, the Smut Marathon is for everyone! Whether you are a experienced writer or you are just starting out, the marathon is for you. It’s fun and challenging and you can learn such a lot about yourself and your writing during the course of the competition. Even more so, it’s part of building the erotic writers community and definitely you want to be part of that!

Plan of Action

Despite going through a very difficult time in my life, I have been planning ahead in the last couple of weeks. I had to, to keep as sane as possible under the circumstances.

In the coming weeks, I will be creating a space for the Smut Marathon. Β I will be working on the assignments I want to give the writers, those who choose to participate in the Smut Marathon. I want to think about jury members, about sponsors, about participants. I really want to do this!

You too?

As from sometime in December, you can sign on for the Smut Marathon 2018 and I hope a lot of you will participate.

The Smut Marathon is all about writing, about endurance but most of all, about doing something together.

  1. I love this idea! I’ve been struggling with writing anything for awhile now, well, pretty much all year, really. And the idea of this being anonymous until the end is really inspiring and I feel like it might get me out of my own head a little bit. Looking forward to it!

  2. YES! Count me in. In fact, consider this my application form asking for acceptance. Of course, I do hope that my stories can be illustrated??? Oh wait, that would give away the authorship. I’ll just have to send in my illustration after the voting closes.

p.s. this project no doubt helped you get through that unhappy time and will help you on the healing path. Thank you for all you do to support writers with WW and now this and for letting us UnDutch get involved.
